General Anti Static Information:
Any time two materials in contact are separated, such as your feet and carpeting when you walk, a static charge is built up in both materials. One material loses electrons resulting in a positive charge, while the other gains them becoming negatively charged. The shock you feel is the electrical charge neutralizing itself by instantly conducting to ground. This charge can be anywhere from 2,000 to 20,000 volts; harmless to us because there is no amperage involved.
Electrical equipment, unfortunately, is much more sensitive. As little as 20 volts can cause loss of data, monitor malfunctions and premature component failures. Sensitive microchips and integrated circuits used by computers today can be harmed before you even touch the keyboard. In winter months, heating systems increase the problem by lowering humidity and increasing static charge.
Anti Static Mats provide passive protection- as soon as you approach your desk, static is dissipated. Rubber soled shoes and rubber casters are non- conductive, the static charge can not pass through the shoes or casters to dissipate through the chairmat and will find an alternate path to discharge, such as your finger tips. The anti-static properties of anti-static chairmats are good for three years.
If the problem is extreme, we have wire grounding kits that can be attached to the chairmat and attached to a grounded surface such as an electrical outlet ground screw.
